Our babies are growing up...

1. A couple of weeks ago, the Drakes voices changed. =( Somehow I thought that they would just go on "peeping", even though the Ducks' voices changed a long time ago...(I'm not really sure when).

2. They are starting to flirt.
One evening last week, one of the Ducks was standing by herself...maybe 3-4 feet from the rest, and one of the Drakes walked up to her, and said something to her. He stood next to her, and they put their bills together, and started to quietly talk (at the same time). The other 12 heard them and immediately stopped what they were doing, and the throng noisily joined them.

3. Tonight, was the first "date night".
I went out to lock them up for the night, and all was quiet, and I thought they had gone to bed. So I was praising them for being such good babies, when I spotted a duck head "slipping behind the barn" so to speak!
You guessed it: a Duck & a Drake trying to stay out all night....I had to round them up, but at least they went in willingly enough, and the Drake led the Duck in. =)

The last berries of the season...

We love to take friends out so they can pick
Blueberries for the very first time in their lives...
A friend of ours from Dallas
joined us on the last day of the season.

This is going to be fun!

He had so much fun at the end of the season, when the berries aren't so plentiful, I can't imagine how much fun he'd have at the peak of the season!

But seriously folks, if you have never been before you really should make plans for next year. Find a patch of Blueberries (or Strawberries) near you and go make some memories.

They were very skittish at first, not at all socialized.
But they like us now, and I can play with their ears! =)

This is our first experience with four-footed livestock, and we are enjoying them a lot.

Pick your own Blueberries!

The blueberry farm will be open for at least 4-5 more weeks, probably through the end of July.

Each variety of blueberries is ripe now and the best part of the season will be the next 3 weeks.

The price is $20.00/gallon for pick your own, or $24.00/gallon for pre-picked.

Hours at the farm:

Monday-Thursday: 7-10am, 6-8pm

Saturdays: 7am-12pm

The Duckies Are Here!

Wow! A tiny little package! We ordered 20 Welsh Harlequin Ducks, and they sent 2 extras. We ordered from www.Holderreadfarm.com David Holderread wrote Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks. They all seem healthy and alert after a 36 hour trip from Oregon to Texas!

Dipping their little bills in the water. One teaspoon of honey and a handful of chopped fresh garden greens in each quart jar.

Our reference to nail polish - we used Honeybee Gardens water based non-toxic polish. We dabbed a little spot on the right foot of the ducklings we presume are males. They have the darker bills. (But it did not stay on- it had come off in just a few hours- now how can we mark them, and they stay marked?!?)

Peaches!!!!

YUM!!! It's that time of year again! Peaches in the backyard, what could be better? After cutting and peeling peaches your hands smell fragrant for hours. We put the latest batch in the freezer for smoothies or ice cream.

The Blueberries are ripening fast...

Mom and I picked 38 pints (4 buckets) of Blueberries this morning. It did not take long- lots of good, big berries, waiting to jump into our pails! We ate a lot, and are eating even more....you may have to roll us around soon.... =)

"Possum Grape" Jelly!

What does it take to make Jelly?


Well, you need fruit, and here we are making Wild (Organic) "Possum Grape" Jelly!
Mr. Babb (our neighbor) was kind to bring us the grapes he harvested from the tree tops.

Teeny little guys- pick them all off. (a long tedious, sticky job.)

Cook 'em and squeeze them. You have to work fast, and wash up frequently, or the acid will cut into your hands like fiber glass. Ouch!!

Now for the easy part~ make the jelly, can it up and label the jars!

It is time to pick blueberries.....

The plan is to be open every Saturday for the next 5-6 weeks.

The hours are from 7am - 2pm. I would recommend getting out earlier in the morning because it's pretty hot by 11:00.

The price is 2.50/pint when you pick your own.
HOWEVER there is a discount if you pick more than 10 pints! For 10 or more pints, the price is 1.50/pint. (ten pints is not a lot, just one bucket)
